Research Summary

My work in the Zheng lab has been primarily focused on the study of chromatin modifying enzymes and the signals that regulate them, using a combination of biochemical and structural methods.

Research Statement

The SET1/MLL family of histone methyltransferases epigenetically mark histone H3 lysine 4 (H3K4) for active transcription. This family of six enzymes form large multi-protein complexes that respond to external signals to regulate its activity on chromatin. I have been studying this family of enzymes by focusing on the well-characterized yeast Set1/COMPASS complex. To date, I have determined the structure of its enzymatic module alone, and in complex with its nucleosomal substrate.
