Fields of Research
A native of Washington State, Cindy Valerio brings a variety of work experience both in and out of higher education. Cindy’s work history includes over fifteen years in the banking and financial sector as a trainer, project/program manager, consultant and manager of people. Other interesting work history includes launching a quality control program at FedEx SmartPost in Kent; managing a non-profit business incubator in Tacoma where she helped secure a $750k capital grant; and in 2015-2016 managing two global medical device recall projects under FDA scrutiny. Cindy’s higher education experience comes from two terms at the University of Washington Tacoma campus. From 2007 – 2010, she worked in the Milgard School of Business as an Administrative Coordinator, helping launch the Center for Leadership and Social Responsibility while earning her Bachelor of Arts in General Business. She was recruited in 2010 to join a fast growing operations team at Premera Blue Cross where she took on multiple leadership roles and led many lean initiatives within the organization. She came back to UW Tacoma in 2016 to pursue her Masters in Business Administration while serving in a Director of Operations role for the School of Education (SoE). It is in the SoE that Cindy began learning and working on several initiatives supporting the advancement of DEI.
On a personal note, Cindy has two grown step children and three beautiful grandsons and resides with two very old (15+) Shih Tzu brothers who have benefited greatly from Cindy’s mandatory remote working over this last year. She enjoys travel (can’t wait to hit the skies again!), container gardening, walking/hiking in the woods, wine and scotch tasting, and most recently – learning to stand up paddle board. Cindy is very excited for this opportunity to join the Department of Pharmacology on June 16th and learn about the amazing research and initiatives that happen here. She is eager to meet each of the faculty and staff and learn how she can support them and their professional endeavors.
